I have a JD4100 that I was always a little reluctant to drive along the road, always aware that, technically, it should be registered as a farm vehicle to be operated legally. And for the most part, I rarely drive it more than just a few houses down the road, or at most, around the block. But at the same time, I realize that in my 16 years as a police officer in the same suburban community, I've never once stopped anyone else for doing just that, nor would I. Guys (or gals, of course) driving down the side of the road on a tractor simply draw no attention. Why should they, if being operated in a reasonably intelligent manner? Of course, if you DO have an accident or cause one, then remember that actions have consequences! Even if not your fault, you'll still at the least get a ticket, not to mention liability issues with the other motorist's insurance company.

I love my JD4100, but it'd be nice to have some instrumentation on it to let me keep an eye on things. Does anyone know if you can get temp and pressure gauges, either JD or aftermarket stuff, for the 4xxx series? Or will automotive type work? Thanks all. Scott in New Hampshire.

Dave,

Regarding your JD4100, where did you get the block and hydrostatic heaters? I went to the JD dealer and the guy told me he didn't think they made any for the 4100. That doesn't sound quite right to me. Are they a JD product or an aftermarket product? Thanks.

I agree that there seems to be problems with Deere and public relations.
I bought a 4100 last fall and although I'm perfectly happy with it, I've
got to say that the dealer left MUCH to be desired. It seems as if they
could not have cared less whether I bought from them or not. Very cavalier
attitude, sort of "Hey, you want the tractor, fine. You don't want it, fine."
If doing it all over again, I'd take a more serious look at Kubota and NH.

Wow...some great stuff about trailers in response to my original post. I do have some trailering experience with a boat and a GMC p/u I used to own, but hadn't given much consideration to wheelbase lengths, etc., as someone pointed out. Some excellent advice and I think I probably just saved myself a bit of money and/or my hide from avoiding the Jeep/trailer combo. I hadn't planned on hauling her around all that much, but it only takes one incident...Of course, now I'm gonna have to figure out alternatives, as I can barely afford the tractor, let alone buy a truck just to haul her around. Thanks again!

Well, I think I've got Mike beat: I only have an 1.5 acres, one-half of which is wooded wetlands. I bought a 4100 last fall with a loader and mower deck, pretty much just for the "fun" of it. What took me an hour to mow now takes me 12 minutes, so I've taken to mowing the neighbor's lawn too! Used to take him 3 hours, takes me just one. The loader I use as an expensive (but awesome) wheel barrel. I've taken to buying multiple tons of fill for the back yard (which slopes quite a bit) just to move it around and justify my tractor. Next spring I'm putting in a garden JUST BECAUSE I CAN! I love my tractor. My girlfriend thinks I'm NUTS! She's right.

ps - Come spring, I'm getting a trailer, too, so I can bring my tractor to all my friends' houses and do stuff for them, too. Of course, I'm gonna have to charge 'em! I just try not to let them see the smile on my face.

Bo - Loved your suggestion for "gift-giving." I think I'll also kick the ground a little with my foot and mutter a few "aw-shucks Sweetie, I really thought you'd like this one..." when I do it. Worked for the tractor.

Speaking of block heaters, my JD dealer tells me they don't make one for the 4100. Is this true? I'd really like to install one but the parts guy just scratches his head and says he doesn't think they make one for it...
